1. Shape
- Round: sweet spot in the middle, most control and forgiveness. Best for beginners and control players.
- Teardrop: sweet spot a little higher, a balance of power and control. Best for most intermediate players.
- Diamond: sweet spot high on the face, most power, least forgiving. For advanced, attacking players.
More detail in round vs teardrop vs diamond.
2. Balance
Balance is where the weight sits. Low balance (towards the handle) feels lighter and is easier to control. High balance (towards the head) adds power on smashes but tires the arm and makes quick volleys harder.
3. Weight
Most adult rackets weigh 340 to 375 g. Lighter rackets are quicker and easier on the arm; heavier ones are more stable and powerful. A head-heavy racket feels heavier than its weight suggests.
4. Hardness and materials
Soft cores (soft EVA or foam) help slow swings and absorb vibration. Hard cores give more control and speed to fast, clean swings. Fibreglass faces are softer and more forgiving; carbon faces are firmer and more precise.

Don't forget
- Wrist strap: every racket has one. Always wear it.
- Overgrip: a fresh one every few weeks; add one if the handle feels thin.
- Try first: hire rackets of different shapes before you buy.
